Safe Weed Control

Dealing with weeds each season should be thought of as control. If you can get rid of the weed before it blooms and produces seeds spreading them over your landscape, you are controlling them.

This topic has many gardeners confused, thus making it a bit dangerous. Many customers I come in contact with just want to kill without really thinking about what that herbicide will do to there landscape. This blog is meant to help you make safe good decisions in the garden.
One of the most common misunderstood products is weed and feed for lawns. You can't kill and feed at the same time without some negative reaction to your landscape. If you have trees, shrubs and perennials growing in and around your lawn these plants will be effected by the herbicide that will be killing the broad leaf weeds in the lawn. Please be careful with when and how much of this product you use.
Here are some safe, easy and even free ways to get rid of unwanted plants.
Boiling water
I hope you can see the damage the left is before, the right 2 hours later.. I find that the weeds in the cracks in my drive have grass and broad leaf weeds, this is a perfect place for  boiling water. You will have to re-apply but it is easy, safe and FREE.

Solarzing an area
This is the process of putting clear or black plastic over an area making sure to secure it with something to keep the air out. The heat of the day will kill the plants and the top several inches of the root.
Water the area well, cover and watch the plant burn.

House hold items
If you mix 2 gallons of water, 2 cups of vinegar, 1 cup of Epson salts and 2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap, mix and spray on weeds that are thirsty you will do damage .This will not work on all of your unwanted plants, but it will take care of many of them.
