Heat Stress in the Garden

It's starting early this year, 100+ temperatures for the next week, it's brutal. Not only is it sizzling during the day, but the night time temps are not cool enough to let our plants rest. This will send them to a very stressful period. Heat stress causes stress to all garden plants, but it can cause bloom drop on tomatoes, peppers, snap beans and others. Heat will turn lawns brown; keep blooming perennials and shrubs from growing and blooming and inhibition pollination.
The longer we have this heat the longer your plant will set dormant unwilling or able to bloom. Once it temps return to 'normal' and nights are cool your plants will pick up regular growth.
Unfortunately there is not much we can do once you have planted. I would certainly try to keep them cool by making a make shift shade cover, keeping in moist in the heat of the day as best possible. Take it off at night, putting it on during the hottest time of the day.

Planting heat tolerant varieties such as, Heat master, Summer Set, Solar Fire were developed to handle our heat and will make growing tomatoes easier and more productive.
As much as selection matters so does placement. You will see that tags state full sun, but in our high desert all edibles will benefit from lots of morning sun and shade in the heat of the afternoon.
