Preparing for bulb planting
In my first post on this topic I told you to wait until late October or early November to plant your bulbs. But there are things your can to now so planting day is fun. This post will cover how to prepare containers or planting beds for your new bulbs.
Lets get started
Containers are one of my favorite places to plant bulbs. Start by removing any unwanted plants, adding several inches of healthy amendment, bulb fertilizer, or bone meal and blend together. Water well.
If you are planting in a garden bed you will do the same thing, tilling the area after you add amendments and nutrients. Watering will wake up the beneficial micro's and make the soil alive and ready for your bulbs.
Preparing now will help the soil turn into a warm well fed environment for your bulbs to live until spring.
Depth and spacing of your bulbs
I will cover this again when planting season has arrived but I like to plant my bulbs 2 to 3 inches deeper than package directions. This is to help with the wind we struggle with, and your bulbs may bloom a bit later. I also like to plant them closer than package directions, I want the impact of bright color.
