Bulb Planting Season, 2013 Post #2

Choosing bulbs
Have you bought any bulbs yet, I haven't but heading to a garden center today for the speciality bulbs and the box stores for the bulk buying. Yes I shop everywhere for plants and gardening supplies. Here is what I found today.

Size matters when it comes to bulbs, the larger the older they are and this means your blooms will be larger as well. Some Tulips are not a long lived perennials, you should get 3 to 5 years of blooms. If you are looking for a longer blooming tulip look for the Darwin Hybrid varieties will bloom for many years.
Daffodils are a great long lived perennial, they naturalize beautifully and will bloom forever, almost.

Look carefully for blemishes and scares on your bulbs, this is one reason I like to buy from a basket. I can count and check every bulb. Make sure they are firm and have a healthy color. These daffodils are firm, nice color and one on the right has a baby. You can break it apart and plant two.
These bulbs are now stored in my garage in a cool, dry spot that is not getting sunlight. Planting day 2 to 2 1/2 months out.
