Summer Care for Tomatoes in the High Desert

Now that we are in the middle of August caring for edibles in important. Tomatoes are one plant that will benefit from summer pruning and deadheading. Taking of the blooms is important, removing blooms will send the energy from making more to tomatoes to getting the small green tomatoes to grow and ripen.

Here is a photo of a yellow pear tomato that I cut off blooms and some limbs that were using to much energy, now the green tomatoes can ripen.

I know it is hard, but here in the high desert the days are shorter and the nights are cooler, time to start thinking about how to get ripe edibles.
Make sure to water as needed, and no need to fertilize.

  1. It kills me to do it every year, but I got all my tomato plants pruned. Thanks for the reminder to do this! Hopefully the few tomatoes I have will ripen. They didn't do great this year but after bumper crops the past two years I shouldn't complain.
