I am sorry to report that burying my sunflower containers did not work and I think I know why, air. What I think happened is I had dug the hole to deep, plied about 6 inches of dirt over the top keeping air from getting anywhere near the roots. Two days later I figured it out when the leaves where totally limp, but the soil was wet. I knew better, really I did, air is as important as water.
If you bury your containers only bury them as deep as the container keeping the top exposed.
I cut off the blooms and brought them inside so I can hopefully get a few seeds.
