Planting in the Heat

The July heat can make planting in the gardening a bit of a challenge, not only for us but also for the plants. Although there are better times to plant I am planning to plant a couple of Penstemon, and maybe my Verbena. Here are a couple of things that will help.

Soil Prep
As I have always advised using a good organic soil amendment when introducing a new plant to your landscape is the first step for success; and it is even more important now. Compost, soil amendments and planting mixes help retain moisture and give that little extra nutrient boost to the plant. Once you have planted lay about an inch over the top of the planting area to help the soil stay moisture longer. Make sure that your planting area has moist soil; fill the hole let it drain and fill again. Once planted water thoroughly.

Root Enhancements
There are many products in the market that help plants root in faster, and most are worth the money, but the one that I use is SuperThrive. This product is a vitamin and mineral supplement that helps stimulate plant growth by providing those vitamins that are not naturally found in soils. It not only helps with transplantation but I also use when I have a stressed plant. The website has great information on this product.

Caring for the Newly Planted
Watering is critical. Make sure the soil is moist while planting and be prepared to water as needed, that could be daily or every other day for the first few weeks. Once the weather cools your watering can slow down as well, maybe to weekly and then bi-weekly.
Removing blooms can also help plants settle in without using excess energy; most will bloom again so not to worry about having color this season.
