Weather and Plants: Keeping Spring Bulbs from Emerging Early

The high desert weather can play tricks on our plants. I noticed that my spring bulbs were starting to break through the soil, yikes. Luckily we were rewarded with a 6 inch snow storm and very cold temperatures.

Slowing your bulbs down with cold is the only way to save the blooms for spring.
The snow is a perfect cold source to cover them telling them to slow down, its too early for spring blooms. I will add snow as long as I have it available.
You will need to do this as soon as you see them, if they set bud or bloom its to late. Just leave them be, clean them up in the spring and wait.

Once the snow is gone I will use my ice cube watering method to keep them cold and watered.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.
