Fall Planting Bulbs, Plan before you Plant

The best looking gardens/landscapes are those that have color or interest all season. This is where spring blooming bulbs will help. There are many families of bulbs with many varieties that will provide any color from early to late spring.

Because I have a new yard I have spent time walking and thinking about where they will grow well and give me a great show. I have decided that I will be planting mine in containers.

Tips for planting in containers
If you use plastic or thin ceramic containers let them winter over in the garage. They will need some light and water once or twice a month. Once spring arrives get them outside and water 2 to 3 times a week.

Container soils need to be rich in nutrients and drains well. I use Patio Plus from the Kellogg's Soil Products for all of my containers. You can find this at any Home Depot for a great price.

Add bulb fertilizer when planting, once spring hits and they are 3 to 4 inches tall fertilizer again, water regularly and enjoy.
It is okay to crowd your bulbs, the closer you plant them the more dramatic look you will have. It is easy to divide them in a season or two.

Hope this helps get you excited about planting bulbs, they are a great surprise in the spring.
