Wisteria

This blog posting will not cover how to plant and care for Wisteria. It is meant to show you what happens when too many are planted in the wrong area and never pruned correctly.

This plant is a member of the Pea family. Wisteria can be vigorous and the vines will easily twine and hang on to anything in there way. Using them where space is limited will keep you busy with pruning to keep them in check. Their attributes are hardiness, vigor and the ability to climb high. The flowers are amazing and large, one reason why they are so popular.
Below are before and after shots of this plant out of control.

Those who must have them either need to give them plenty of room or the ability to prune and care for the plant every year. Leaving them to their own will create the issues.
Note the boards on this deck separating and the damage from constricting around the rails of the deck.
