Gardening in a high desert has many challenges, now we add the
fact that we are in the third year of a drought and the need to find ways to conserve
every gallon of water becomes job number one.
The watering tips I will be sharing with you should be a
regular part of gardening practices for anyone, especially for those of us living in a high desert region.
Mulching
Adding
bagged soil amendments or homemade compost to the planting area will keep water
from flowing past the root system in sandy soils, and help put air spaces in
clay soils. Compost and soil amendments have a sponge like quality that holds
moisture, once the surrounding soils dry’s it will pull moisture from these particles’.
Studies
show that a 3” layer of nutrient rich organic mulch reduces water usage by up
to 30%.
Kellogg Organic Gromulch is a perfect ground cover for any garden bed,
including your edibles. It has been noted that 65% of household water consumption
goes to watering your yard and gardens, using mulch will allow you to water the
area less often. For those who struggle with wind a quick spray of water will
keep it in place.
You
will find this and our other Kellogg Organic soil amendments and potting soils at the
Home Depot and Lowe’s stores at a great price.
