Herb Gardening in Containers

Now that I am planting more edibles I needed to find a close convenient place to plant. These barrels are located where there is plenty of sun, easy to water and close to the kitchen. When deciding what to plant in each one I use a method that matches cooking. The barrel on the right has rosemary and lavender, they get full sun and are herbs for meat dishes. The next barrel has what I think of as soft stemmed herbs; chives, parsley and lemon thyme. They will get great sun, but a bit of shade in the late afternoon. These can be used in either cooked dishes or raw. I  also added some color from my zonal geraniums cutting. Once summer hits I should have blooms all season. The last container has my stevia and eventually basil, it is a bit early for the basil. We all know the Northern Nevada know that spring weather can be unsettled.

On a larger scale are raised beds. This has worked beautifully the past 3 seasons, it is easy to work in and looks great. The cover allows me to plant early, and helps with shade in the heat of the summer. This photo was taken last season and has lettuce, leek and onions.

Because we have a pretty short growing season and our weather is another challenge I make sure the soil if enriched with organic amendment and soils. Edibles are very feeders, so make sure to load up. Feed the soil, the soil will feed the plant.
Kellogg Garden Products now being all organic are perfect for the job and can be found at Lowe's and Home Depot are very reasonable prices.
