Variegated Plants

Variegation is the appearance of different colored areas on the leaf or stem of a plant.  The change in color is caused by a lack of chlorophyll producing tissues in the plant to create white to yellow colors in certain areas of the leaf.  Veriegation can be achieved in different ways. If a plant is variegated by nature, it will stay that way, but if these changes are man-made, the plant can revert if under stress.

There are many variations to choose from. The lighter colors can be in the middle of the leaf, neatly placed on the edge, or mixed throughout the leaf. When choosing plants, make sure that all the stems have variegated leaves on them. If your plant grows leaves or stems without variegation, cut them off to the ground.

Gardeners love using variegated plants for the color and texture they provide with or without blooms. Variegated plants will benefit from shade in the hot afternoons in the high desert. They also make shady garden beds come alive.
