Now that May has arrived we need to make sure our cool season crops are in and growing, before long the heat will become an issue for them. With some planning we can plant those cold sensitive plants now taking advantage of this amazing weather. If you are wanting to plant "early" you will help your plants develop a good root system making sure you get those blooms and any crops.
Hardening off plants is a process of moving your starter plants outdoors for a part of the day to get them direct sunlight, dry air and cool afternoons. This will thicken the leaf and harden the plant giving it more strength.
There may not be a time that my post doesn't cover amending your high desert soils. So many gardeners comment on how awful there soil is, but actually it is high desert soil and with a little effort can be made very hospitable to your plants.Once you have picked a plant that is suited for the area find a bagged or home made amend to dig in before planting. This will not be a waste of time or money.
Here are some great choices you will find at my garden center in Lowe's Carson City.
