Spring Weather Plant Protection

Spring weather can be very lovely or quite challenging here in the Northern Nevada high desert. It is time to get our cool season crops planted, but we have to be ready if the weather turns to cold, and for too many days in a row.
Make sure to keep up with our weather reports, this is your first defense. Here are two ideas that I use and thought they might help with your spring gardening.

Here are my wire cage covers my husband made for my garden. Note the bolt and washer that holds them together, they are very strong. I will cover the plant and throw a sheet of light fabric over the top, once the weather warms, off they come. These also work great keeping rabbits out of the newly emerging plants.

Another great way to cover newly planted plants are these 5 gallon water bottles. I cut the bottom off making a perfect mini green house for smaller plants. I also cut some long ways for the shorter plants. You may have to dig it in keeping it from blowing away.
